The Representative Form of Government
One of the great hallmarks of our country is the representative form of government. Every voter is entitled and encouraged to participate in a process to select good men and women who will represent their interests. This concept was a key building block for our founding fathers as they set up a form of government to reflect and protect the will of the people.
While there could still be a case made for direct democracy in some cases, it is not a particularly practical form of government. As John Adams wrote ” In a large society, inhabiting an extensive country, it is impossible that the whole should assemble, to make laws: The first necessary step then, is, to depute power from the many, to a few of the most wise and good. ” The goal is to have an elected body that in a miniature fashion represents “an exact portrait of the people at large.” (Thoughts on Government, April 1776).
We accomplish this by choosing candidates and electing representatives whose qualifications most closely reflect our concept of good government.
What can you expect from me?
Our legislative district has grown accustomed to having representatives in state government that listen to and respond to the will and needs of their constituents. I believe that my experience and views on the issues accurately reflect those of our district and I am ready to represent you.
As your state representative, I will:
- Listen to you and provide easy ways for you to communicate with me
- Make decisions and vote based on principle, not on politics
- Protect your constitutional and God-given rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
- Fight to keep government small and taxes low
- Advance your cause by bringing attention to issues that are important to our district
- Work with other representatives that share our values and principles
- Give more thought to the next generation than the next election
